Obituary for Anthony P. Capone

Anthony P. Capone
Anthony P. Capone

Age 91, died on Thursday, August 13 in his beloved home town of Pittsburgh. Anthony, or Tony to his friends, was born on February 6, 1924 in Aliquippa, PA to Aniello and Mary Capone. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the armed services in March 1943, serving with the 77th Field Hospital. He was honorably discharged in April 1946 after having received the American Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. After his service, he attended Duquense University and graduated in 1950 with a degree in business administration. He landed his first job at Arthur Young as an accountant and remained in that position for six years. Deciding to strike out on his own, Anthony started his own accounting practice in 1956 and for more than 50 years served thousands of friends, families, and colleagues. In fact, he was still doing tax returns until his passing, never wanting to leave his clients without a trusted advisor. Anthony is survived by his brother, Ralph; his sister, Rose, and his four children: Neil, Anthony Jr. (Kellie), Mark (Kelly), and Dean (Cheryl). He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Carolyn. Anthony leaves behind a roadmap for our lives about the meaning of commitment. He was resolutely devoted to his wife, his children, his family, his friends, his clients, and his country. We will miss him dearly, but we will cherish our memories and the values he instilled that will guide our steps forever. And we take comfort in knowing that our mom has welcomed him to God’s kingdom with a loving embrace. Funeral arrangements by BEINHAUERS, 724-941-3211. Life Story for Anthony P. Capone

Bethel Park accountant was dedicated to family, clients

Tony Capone retired from accounting years ago but never stopped taking care of the clients he served for more than a half-century.

“He was in his 90s and still doing tax returns. We said, ‘Dad, it might be time to pass this along to a newer generation,' but he refused,” said his son, Mark Capone. “He never wanted to pass along his clients to anyone else.”

Such commitment to his clients, friends and family made what they consider a road map to follow in their own lives.

Anthony P. Capone of Bethel Park, who owned an accounting business in McMurray, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 2015. He was 91.

Mr. Capone taught his four children a strong work ethic as they watched him work long days, especially around tax season.

“But we had dinner every night together, no matter what,” his son said. “We always had that time together. At night, he'd work from the home office, and we would watch TV there. Even if he was working, he was always around.”

The family even worked together, raising horses they owned at the Meadows racetrack in Washington County. Mark, his twin brother Anthony Jr., Neil and Dean worked summers at the racetrack.

“We could cheer for the horses together,” Mark Capone said.

Anthony Capone was born in Aliquippa and enlisted in the Army in 1943, serving in the 77th Field Hospital and the occupation of Germany until 1946.

“He loved his country and the fact that he could serve,” his son said.

When he returned to Pittsburgh to attend Duquesne University, his brother's girlfriend set him up on a blind date with her co-worker, Carolyn Barrett. They married a year later and spent the next 54 years together until Carolyn Capone's passing last year.

Mr. Capone worked hard — first with the firm Arthur Young before opening his own practice — so he could pay for his children's educations and two weeks every year in Ocean City, Md.

“We knew that he would save all year long. He put us all through college. He'd save for those vacations. That was time we always knew we'd have as a family,” Mark Capone said.

Keeping the family close was important.

“All of our immediate family was here in Pittsburgh. There was not a single holiday that would pass without us being together,” his son said.

In addition to his children, Anthony Capone is survived by his brother Ralph and his sister Rose.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Valentine Church in Bethel Park.
