Obituary for Samuel Scott McKenney III

On Tuesday, January 31,2023 Samuel Scott McKenney lll of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Palm Coast Florida, passed away peacefully at the age of 89.

Sam was born in Pittsburgh, PA in 1933 to Mareta and Samuel Scott McKenney. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Karen Carlsen McKenney, sons Douglas McKenney (Lori) of Clarksville, MD and Scott McKenney (Jackie) of Pittsburgh, PA; daughter, Laura McKenney Tate of Norcross, GA. He is survived by his nine grandchildren, Ilyssa, Jacqueline, Alexandra, Tommy, Stephen, Angela, Jenna, Julia and Lindsay and his great grandson, Lucas.

Sam received his undergraduate degree from Denison University in 1954, then attended the University of Virginia Law School, completing his Juris Doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh in 1957. He practiced law in the corporate world, first as a staff attorney with Smith Kline & French Laboratories; then as General Counsel with Rockwell Manufacturing, and finishing his career as Assistant General Counsel with Rockwell International. After retirement, Sam kept active as an attorney by handling matters for his family and a few private clients.

Sam was generous with his time and expertise, serving his churches and his community in a variety of ways. He was a long-time member and deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church; an affiliated member of Hammock Community Church (Palm Coast, Fl) and a member and trustee of Baldwin United Presbyterian Church. For 8 years, Sam was commissioner in Upper St. Clair Township with 3 years as president, and 3 years as vice-president. Before their Florida years, Sam and Karen had a vacation home at Smith Mountain Lake, VA, where Sam became involved as director of the Waterfront Condominium Association.

Sam was an avid golfer, and a member of Valley Brook Country Club, Hammock Dunes Club and the Waterfront Country Club.

A true family man, he was involved in his children's activities as they were growing up. He volunteered with youth sports organizations as president of the Mt. Lebanon Baseball Association, director and one of the founders of the Upper St. Clair Athletic Association, and was a manager of several youth baseball teams.

He was a Steelers season ticket holder, rarely missed a game in person or on television, usually enjoying these experiences with Karen, kids and grandkids.

With all his accomplishments, and blessed with a loving and beautiful family, Sam’s greatest joy was his wife, Karen. Not a day passed without him telling her, a friend or even a stranger, how happy and fortunate he was to have met his wife and been able to spend his life with her.
