Obituary for Robert Anthony "Bob" Maycheck

Age 90, passed away on May 13, 2020, in Upper St. Clair, following an illness. He was born August 31, 1929, in Ralph, PA, the much beloved only son of Anton S. and Estelle R. Maycheck. Following high school, Bob proudly served in the Marine Corps, playing trumpet in the "President's Own" United States Marine Band. A talented trumpeter, he also enjoyed playing in the Richard Lewis Orchestra at nightclubs and engagements across southwestern Pennsylvania both before and after his service in the Marine Corps. After earning a degree in History from St. Vincent's College, he married his college sweetheart and one true love, Audrey Gallas, and they settled in Pittsburgh. They celebrated 62 years of marriage in November. She survives, along with five daughters, Linda (Frank) Scuiletti of Chapel Hill, NC, Sue (Mark) Poljak of McMurray, Karen (Pat) McElhinny of Upper St. Clair, Diane Killmeyer of Ft. Mill, SC, and Laurie (Tim) Flynn of Medford, NJ; fourteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and sister, Ruth Lang. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by sisters, Dorothy Sabik, Florence "Tootsie" Podrasky, Virginia "Jean" Hlebinsky, and Gertrude Maycheck. Bob retired from the Pittsburgh Public Schools in 1985, following a long career as a teacher, guidance counselor, and administrator. He was a seeker of knowledge and an avid reader; in particular he read his Bible every day. He loved jogging, golf, bowling, music, and cheering for the Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, and Pitt Panthers. But most of all he was devoted to his family members--encouraging their pursuits, cheering their accomplishments, and offering words of support during challenging times. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. There will be no viewing due to the pandemic. Private funeral services will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church on Friday, May 15, 2020. Interment will be at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies in Bridgeville. Those who wish to remember Bob in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1028 Benton Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15212. Arrangements are being handled by BEINHAUER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, in McMurray. Please add tributes at beinhauer.com
