Obituary for Richard Donald "Dick" Lund

Richard (Dick) Lund of Upper St. Clair, age 86, passed away on November 3, 2022. A native of Lakewood, New Jersey, he was born on August 31, 1936, to the late Theodore and Lillie Lund. After attending Lakewood High School where he lettered in baseball and basketball, he served for two years in the Army then moved to Pittsburgh in 1957 to attend Duquesne University and never left the city. While at Duquesne (BA 1961), he majored in business, was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and was an integral part of the Duquesne University baseball team where he roamed right field for four years with a live bat and a rifle left arm. Most importantly, while at Duquesne he met and began dating his future wife, Donna Dvorchak, and together they formed a formidable campus couple. Dick and Donna married on June 30, 1962. They celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary just a few months before Dick’s passing. Besides his loving wife, Dick is survived by his five sons and daughters-in-law: Rich (Gretchen), Ken (Laura), Don (Donna), Ted (Kad) and Erik (Michelle). He was a devoted husband and parent and his sons are forever grateful for the example he set as a father. Dick had a natural ability to connect with people, which led to his successful career as a sales manager in the paper industry, first with Darragh Paper Co. and then Whitaker-Darragh Paper. He also was a member of the Upper St. Clair Athletic Association for over twenty years. He was a legendary youth baseball coach who taught and mentored countless young men over a thirty year coaching span. During that time he became known as “Pops”, and that is how he is affectionately remembered by family and friends.

Dick was the proud grandfather of twelve grandchildren: Nicole, Hannah, Donny, Jake, Gunnar, Jonathan, Catie, Ben, Luke, Lilly, Brian and Leah, and one great grandchild Braxton. He was the loving brother of Janet, Tom, Bernice, and Ted, and the cherished brother-in-law of Denny, Joyce, Dan, Marty and Jimmy. He will be greatly missed, but he lived life to the full, and those who knew him loved him for the positive impact he had on their lives. The Lund family expresses their gratitude to the staff at Paramount Senior Living in McMurray, Pennsylvania, who cared for Dick over the last several months with such compassion.
