Raymond Ellis Fisher
November 3, 1924 – November 16, 2022

Raymond E. Fisher passed away peacefully at home on November 16, 2022.

Born in Fairview, WV, to George W. Fisher and Anna E. (Sutton) Fisher, he grew up with a love of trains in nearby Silica where his family ran the general store. He graduated Elkins (WV) High School in 1942, and worked in Baltimore prior to military service.

In July 1944 he was enlisted into the U.S. Army Air Corps and trained as an aerial gunner for WWII heavy bombers. Assigned to a B-29 Superfortress at White Sands, NM, he prepared for deployment with the 20th Air Force to the Asia-Pacific theater and the Japan Air Offensive at Isley Field, Saipan, two weeks before the war ended. Following enemy surrender, he flew on humanitarian missions in August and September 1945 to mainland Japan performing low-level aerial deliveries of food, clothing, equipment, and medicine to American POWs until they were repatriated to U.S. forces. At Camp Atterbury, IN, in March 1946, he was honorably discharged from service, then returned to his parents' home in Morgantown, WV.

He trained in Pittsburgh as an accountant, married H. Emogene Eisentrout in 1951 in Morgantown and lived in western Pennsylvania and Fairmont, WV raising six children. He worked long careers with Armour & Company, and Corrosion Control Corporation until his retirement at age 80. Ray enjoyed time with family and friends, travel, history, music, gardening, good jokes, ice cream, and family pets. He was a long-time member, Sunday school teacher, and elder of the First Christian Church of Carnegie.
