Obituary for Phyllis M. McAllister

Phyllis M. McAllister of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, passed peacefully surrounded by family on August 8, 2022. Phyllis, born August 29, 1934, was the daughter of the late Phillip M. Costello and Helen Costello, and loving Wife of the late B. Joseph McAllister. Phyllis was born and raised in Philadelphia, got married at 19 when the love of her life joined the Army, and was transferred to Kansas. She started her work career as a U. S. Army staff secretary earning $0.25 per hour. She left that lucrative position to raise a family and got started right away. It turns out that is what she was made for. She and her husband Joe, moved to McMurray, Pennsylvania in 1960 where they raised their six children. She lost her husband at an early age and was courageous in her devotion to her children and finding a way to get back into the workforce, which she did quite successfully. She enjoyed the country life in McMurray and her Canterbury Road group of good friends. Phyllis lived for over thirty years in Bethel Park. She very much enjoyed being a part of the Pittsburgh and the South HIlls Community. She was an enthusiastic attendee of countless plays, recitals, sports events, and church events for children and grandchildren, a fantastic cook and birthday cake baker, and a pool party hostess of legend. Phyllis was the foundation of a beautiful and loving home where love abounded, she was the Motherhouse where family, friends and even those who just wandered in were always welcome and well fed. She loved her family, loved her friends, loved being with people and loved animals. She gathered new friends every day of her life. Family or friend, you knew you could always call her or call on her, and many did.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, B. Joseph McAllister and her sister, Elizabeth Ashenfelder. Phyllis is survived by her sister, Helen Higgins, her children, Kathleen S. McAllister (Tony Yonto), Diane McAllister (Lori Kilburn), Joseph B. McAllister (Hilda), James K. McAllister (Sheila), Michael S. McAllister (Mary) and Mary Beth Thelk (Richard). She is survived by 24 Grandchildren, each of them a joy to her life, Carey King (Craig), Allison Yonto (Jeff Rau), Daniel A. Yonto, Kevin J. Yonto (Elena), Caitlin Yonto (Kyle Young), Anthony D. Yonto, Michaela R. Yonto, Shane McAllister, Meghan Patterson (Andy), Stephanie Bartlett (John), Cameron McAllister, Nick McAllister, Brendan McAllister (Julie), Bradley McAllister, Erin McAllister, Abaigeal McAllister (James Parris), Michael S. McAllister, Jr. (Shawn Luther), Maura McAllister (Sara Przybyla), Patrick McAllister (Brandon Besash) James McAllister, Lindsey R. Thelk, Matthew J. Thelk, Shannon Thelk, and Sean Thelk. Yonto, Elena McAllister and Elisa McAllister, Cody Patterson, Caleb Patterson, Audrey Claire Patterson, Harvey Boone Bartlett, Henry McAllister, Wesley McAllister, Katherine McAllister and numerous Nieces, Nephews, Grand Nieces and Grand Nephews in the McAllister, Higgins, Ashenfelder and Zawistoski families.
