Obituary for Patricia Mansmann

Age 91, passed away on November 8, 2022, surrounded by her family. Pat was the eldest of the nine children born to Rex and Margaret McArdle Mansmann and resided in Eighty-Four, Pennsylvania at the time of her death.

To all who knew her, Pat was a witty, warm, welcoming, and wise person who inspired others and provided clear-eyed, non-judgmental, value driven guidance and advice. But most importantly, she led by example - always giving generously of herself and her talents. Pat always wore a bright smile which reflected her warm and nurturing character.

Pat attended St. Bernard’s Elementary School in Mt. Lebanon and St Francis Academy in Whitehall and worked for major Pittsburgh based companies like Alcoa and was an early employee of WQED where she served as Comptroller.

But Pat found a deeper purpose for her life when she volunteered as Lay Missionary teaching in a rural school in Balaclava, Jamacia, West Indies for several years. After returning from Jamacia, Pat relocated to Los Angeles, California where she lived until 2013, at which time she returned to the Pittsburgh area and remained here until her death.

Once she moved to LA, Pat immediately adapted to, and fearlessly perfected, the California Freeway driving style, and provided many hair-raising Freeway rides to her visitors, scarier than any Kennywood ride.

But also, while in Los Angeles, Pat made some of her most significant contributions to the life and growth of the Southern California Church and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Pat started as a volunteer for the LA Religious Education Congress where the staff quickly saw her talents and leadership skills and hired her. Very soon, Pat developed a local Congress into a huge multi-cultural event. To quote a recent publication about the current Congress “LA RE Congress is the largest gathering of its kind in the world” Well done, Pat!

Pat moved onto Campus Ministry and eventually into parish planning and development.

Pat was an inventive and adventurous cook; she loved to entertain friends and family where she would wow her guests with a gourmet meal. Many of our “fancy” family holiday dishes were created by Pat but quickly became part of our traditions. Pat was a gracious hostess making everyone welcome and included in any event she hosted.

In addition to her parents, Pat was predeceased by her brother, Edward F. Mansmann (Dianne) of Perth Amboy, NJ. Pat is survived by her siblings Regis (Mike/Rex) Mansmann of the Philippines; Peter J Mansmann (Sandy) of Eighty-Four; Margaret M. Hufnagel (late Joseph) of Mt. Lebanon; James P. Mansmann of Bethel Park; J Jerome Mansmann (late Carol) of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; Kathleen J. Mansmann of Bridgeville; and Joanne T. Mansmann of Eighty-Four.

Our family would like to thank our sister, Joanne, who cared for Pat so lovingly upon Pat’s return from California. Recently, as Pat’s condition worsened, Joey was ably assisted by our nieces Bea, Nikka, Margie, and Vicky. We thank you all for providing such wonderful care in a joyful - even lyrical - way. Pat really appreciated and enjoyed all of you!
