Obituary for Mary Lou Martin

Mrs. Mary Lou Martin, age 90 of Scott Township, PA, left this earth on July 26, 2022 following a brief illness. We can only surmise that she did so in her bright red Mustang, as it has gone missing without any other plausible explanation. Mary Lou is survived by her three children, D. Steven Martin (Patty), Susan E. Ruttenberg (Daymon), and Nancy A. Martin (Pufferton); six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by the love of her life, husband Donald H. Martin; as well as one sister (Nancy); four brothers (James, Thomas, Ira Lee, and John); a brother-in-law (Phillip); and one nephew (David); all of whom she missed dearly. We can only imagine the Heavenly party they're having!

Mrs. Martin was a devoted educator who retired from the Pittsburgh Public School System, then worked as a beloved substitute teacher at Chartiers Valley High School well into her eighties. Her sense of humor and zest for life endeared her to many of her students.

Mrs. Martin loved the libraries, museums and art galleries of Pittsburgh, as well as the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium. She was "The Mom" who took scores of children to enjoy all of these places, including one fateful trip where we got stuck in a snow drift and had to walk the half mile back home. Mom probably shouldn't have been driving dad's Triumph sports car that day!

Mary Lou enjoyed skiing and rafting in the Laurel highlands, spending summer vacations in Ocean City, MD and camping at Kelly's Island, OH where she made sure us kids took a bath every night in a little blue plastic boat, despite our desperate cries for help.

She will be forever remembered for her baking skills, including her apple dumplings and lemon meringue pie, as well as her famous cheese dip that is always a favorite staple at our family parties and holidays. Sorry, we're not providing the recipe!

Mary Lou will be sadly missed but fondly remembered by her immediate and extended family and friends for her strength and grace despite a very difficult childhood. She was an inspiration to all of us and the perfect example of "life is what you make of it."

In lieu of a formal service, a Celebration of Life will be held at a future date (targeting late October). For those who wish to do so, donations to the Good Samaritan Hospice in Wexford, PA, who provided such attentive and loving care to Mary Lou in her final days, would be greatly appreciated.
