Henry J. Smith was a quiet and accomplished man. The son of Henry F. and Mary Francis Mikluck Smith; he was the first baby born in the Flushing, NY hospital March 19, 1932.
His family moved to Connellsville, PA in 1944 where his father took a job in a glass plant. He graduated from Immaculate Conception High School in 1949. During his high school years, he was an altar boy, played basketball, and was known for his sharp game of pool.
He worked his way through college at the "Shack' handling laundry service and providing corsages at prom time[s] He graduated with honors from St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, PA in 1953. During a blind date he met his future wife, Adelaide Morgan Briley.
Henry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1953 and was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in 1954. He was stationed in Japan and South Korea during the Korean War and was discharged in 1962.
Henry and Adelaide married on October 15, 1955, and have six children: Michael & (Sue) Smith, Becky Smith & (Tony Ricci,) Debbie & (Jeff) Corcoran, Kevin & (Lori) Smith, Maura Teynor, and David & (Angie) Smith. They have nine grandchildren: Jake and Seamus Ricci, Emily Smith Hebert, Breanna and Brody Smith, Danielle and Marissa Corcoran, Kyle and Ryan Teynor, and Kelsey and Amber Smith. They have four great grandchildren; Karson, Korbyn and Konnor Teynor and Bailey Hebert.
He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James, and his sister, Mary Perry.
Henry earned his CPA, and his first job was conducting audits with the accounting firm Ernst and Ernst. He then became controller at Westmoreland Hospital in Greensburg, PA. Following that he was named the controller of Magee Women’s Hospital and became its Chief Financial Officer. He was a founding member of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Hospital Financial Management Association. He retired in 1991.
During his retirement, he volunteered for 18 years at the Children’s Home in Pittsburgh as its treasurer. And like many CPAs, he filed hundreds of income tax returns for his acquaintances free of charge.
He was an amateur photographer and delighted family and friends with slideshows from his world travels. He and Adelaide traveled in Europe, Eastern Europe, Russia, China, South America, and Kenya as well as many places in the United States.
A memorial mass and inurnment will be held at a later date.
