Obituary for H. David Holzer

H. David Holzer of Scott Township, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 24, 2023. He was 86 years old. He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Louise Holzer (nee Visocky) and his three children: Robert David (Springfield, VA), Kimberly Ann (Seattle, WA) and David Lindsay (Scott). Born in Dormont, Pa., on January 2, 1937, he was the son of Edward P. Holzer and Claire Rose Hawthorne.

Dave, or “HD” as many knew him, was devoted to his family, children, five grand and three great grandchildren, his business, and his many passions, including baseball, music, travel and collecting. Juggling work demands and a growing career, Dave still found time to actively participate in all his children’s lives, including baseball and softball coach and swimming official. As a father and grandfather, Dave encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue their individual interests, passions and varied careers with steadfast support.

A highly successful insurance agent, executive and small business owner, Dave was equally passionate about meeting the needs and life issues that his thousands of clients can readily attest to. For Dave, every client also became a true friend. Dave was a catalyst for establishing the Business Network International in Southwestern Pennsylvania and, along with his son David, are the only two members elected to the BNI Western Pennsylvania Hall of Fame.

A lifelong Pirates fan, Roberto Clemente was his singular sports hero, and Dave avidly collected and consumed everything related to the life, career, and memory of The Great One. Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald filled his life with their music, and a one-time crooner himself, Dave was apt to suddenly appear on stage to belt out a few classics at weddings, graduations and other events—to the delight of the crowd.

Service in the US Army, which posted him to Germany and Italy, sparked a wanderlust that witnessed Dave and Bernie venturing to Spain, Japan, the Caribbean, Canada, California, Hawaii and Seattle. He particularly enjoyed family beach vacations that expanded to include extended family, grandkids, and many other friends.

In addition to his wife and children, Dave leaves a lasting and loving legacy to his grandchildren Lindsay Van Wie, Emma Holzer, Daniel Larsen, Nathaniel Holzer, Katrina Holzer, and three great grandchildren Henry, Kate and Joe Van Wie.

In lieu of a formal funeral service the family plans to hold a celebration of Dave’s life and legacy at a future date.
