Although I had talked to Gene a couple times as I walked the neighborhood, I really got to know him when we were on the HOA board. I was already retired a few years and when Gene retired, we started golfing together. One day we went to the Rolling Hills course. The owner told us about a new senior club they were starting. Discount golf on Mondays and Tuesdays, free donut and coffee, and a luncheon at the end of the season. Being two “frugal” guys all we could say was “sign us up”. So, every Monday morning weather permitting (and sometimes not) we would be out on the course. Those were great times. Eventually, our wives came into the picture (big surprise)! That led to backyard barbecues, and family outings. Gene was the director of entertainment. He was always finding something for us to do. Some were good (Annapolis trip) and some not so (Elvis impersonator). No matter what the level of entertainment we always had fun together. Last year we went on 27-day 7,500-mile trip by car, plane and ship from Pittsburgh through the Panama Canal, up the Central American Coast, to Hawaii and back. It was for Ellen and I a most memorable and fun trip because we were with our friends. One day that stands out for me was traveling through the canal. It was a gorgeous day that the four of us spent on our adjoining balconies just relaxing and talking while we listened to the pilot’s narration of the history of the canal. We had planned a Greek island cruise in May, but it was cancelled due to the Corona Virus. After we got the final word about the cancellation Gene and I were talking about it and as he always said “It is what it is” and he added at least we're all healthy and we can go another time. Well Gene wasn’t in good health and now he’s gone, and I know what he always said, but this is difficult to accept. I’ll miss you buddy. I’ll miss you whenever I travel somewhere, at our barbecues, at morning pickleball and every time I pass your house. I posted a couple pictures. One of Gene and his girl Joyce and of the four of us on the peak of the Haleakala Crater on Maui in the clouds. Things won’t be the same without him.
