Babe was born and raised in the Beechview section of Pittsburgh. He grew up playing baseball and developed a great love of the game. He played Little League in Beechview, and at South Hills High School where he won City Championships. After High School, he continued to play in the American Legion and as a Semi Pro, where he traveled to California to play. Babe's love of baseball led him to lifelong friendships that still endure today.

Babe worked at the Port Authority of Allegheny County for 28 years, mainly out of the Collier division. Like many Pittsburgher’s of the 1970’s, he developed a passion for the Steelers that stayed with him the rest of his life. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in the Allegheny National Forest, where he had a cabin. Babe was a Veteran, who served in the U.S. Army.
