Bernard Joseph Grimes, MD of McMurray, PA, died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family on Monday, February 28, 2022 at age 87. Born in Philadelphia to Margaret Feeney and George Grimes, Bernie is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Mary Carroll Parent Grimes and four children and eight grandchildren. He is the loving father/father-in-law of Mary Beth and Steve Keane, Michelle and Mark Grimes, Maggie and John Grimes, and Amy and Michael Grimes, MD, and cherished grandpa of Brenna, Lily, and Liam Keane, Colin and Lauren Grimes, Caileigh, Dillan, and Keegan Grimes. Bernie is also survived by his loving brothers-in law, Edward and Kevin and Karen Parent, and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Bernie began his higher education under the Jesuits of St. Joseph’s Prep, connecting deeply to their mission of being “a man for and with others” throughout his entire life. Bernie’s education continued at St. Joseph’s University and University of Pennsylvania Medical School, Philadelphia. He completed his internship at University of Pittsburgh, his medical residency at the University of Kansas, and his endocrine fellowship at University of Pittsburgh. Bernie was also honored to serve in the American Indian Health Service in Lawton, Oklahoma. He practiced medicine at Mercy and St. Clair Hospitals, where he especially enjoyed teaching young doctors. Because Bernie loved taking care of people, he continued to serve patients at the Catholic Charities Free Health Clinic after retirement. Bernie also enjoyed preparing free tax returns through VITA, serving as a CASA volunteer in Washington, PA, tutoring elementary reading through Oasis, and serving his parish community on the St. Vincent de Paul Committee. Bernie prized time spent with family above all— especially holding grandchildren, gathering at the Jersey Shore, coaching soccer, and traveling the world with Mary Carroll.
